Dean Taylor Drewyer has been exhibiting his work in the mid-Atlantic region since the early 1970s. He received his MFA in painting from the George Washington University in 1986, studying with Bill Woodward and Arthur Smith. He has won several prestigious awards for both his paintings and his teaching over these last 38 years. His work resides in private collections from Florida to Pennsylvania.
“I’ve always seen my work simply as a celebration of what it means to me to be alive.” Mr. Drewyer’s work is a record of his personal visual exploration of light, shadow, color, form, and space. I’ve tried to live up to the ideal in a quote attributed to Henri Cartier-Bresson, ‘… putting one’s head, one’s eye and one’s heart on the same axis’. When that magic happens, some meaning can be retrieved from the chaos and brought back to the tribe. Thats what I try to do.”

Oil Painting: Color is very important and I use it to create drama, tension (push and pull). Paintings usually have a narrative for example, Figures in contemplation, conversation or the moment. Abstracts – lush colors depicting energy, movement or place within. My creativity is an ongoing process throughout the painting. My goal is to have the viewer stop, think about the color, the moment, setting, movement or the happening. I paint small and large canvases with acrylics and oils – portraits, figures, still life, landscape and abstract. Currently I have a studio at King Street Studios in Leesburg, and I am an Associate Artists at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria.
